Five minutes with our Creative Director, Jon

Spend five minutes with our Creative Director, Jon and get to know how he designs.

If you’re an aspiring designer or just want to learn more about our designer’s thought process, we’ve asked him some questions to help inspire.

How do you get unstuck creatively?

“Well, I am guilty of going to Pinterest for inspiration, depending on the project. Then generally search the internet for brands that relate to the brief we have – seeing what someone else has done, and try and do the opposite, so it disrupts and makes you think/take a second look. Mainly to make it stand out from others.”

What if you have an “oh sh-” moment designing – how do you solve it?

“I wouldn’t say I have had an oh shi moment, but I do quite like it when there is a last min deadline, and you have to put in the hard graft to create some sort of magic :-)”

What’s your favourite kind of project to work on?

“I do like a branding project. For example, Napo (a Vodka drink), which we recently worked on, is always a nice project to work on. Illustration and infographics are also nice to get your teeth into. And then there’s a motion project, be it a promotional animation or bringing a brand’s mark to life. Designing websites is fine, but really it’s the creativity behind it and the message which floats my boat. Way back in the old days, I would create Flash websites; that was really enjoyable creating these interactive sites that wowed.”

What’s your favourite design tool and why?

“Well, I do like to create as much as possible my own assets rather than stock images, icons, illustrations etc so I would say illustrator, Photoshop and my camera are my preferred tools in my bag. Oh, and more time if that was possible.”

Where do you find your inspiration?

“I would say subconsciously inspiration is from the drive to work or when watching a film/tv or going to the shops. Just everything really. It’s like you go into a garden centre, and you see this great collection of colours, and you’re thinking: ‘Yeah that’s the colour palette I’m after’. Or an old photo or a piece of clothing that sparks an idea. Something just grabs you.”
