23rd January 2023

Thankfully, when you get a new phone, transferring your old data over is typically a hassle-free process. But what about your Google Two-Factor Authenticator app?

Unfortunately, you will need to manually transfer your account because it is not an automatic procedure. Although, it’s an easy one.

If you’re here, you probably know what Google Authenticator is.

But – in case you don’t – the Google Authenticator app protects your accounts against password theft by generating login codes. In a time of heightened cybercrime, two-factor authentication platforms, like the Google one, are crucial for ensuring the security of your accounts, so remember to set it up on any new phone.

How to transfer your Google Two-Factor Authenticator account

You’ll need your old and new phone to do this, so hold fire on chucking your old phone out.

  1. Firstly, on your new phone, install the Google Authenticator app. While that’s installing, go onto your old phone and tap the three dots in the top right corner, go to Transfer Accounts, then click Continue.
  2. Select the accounts you want to transfer.
  3. Click Export.
  4. On your old phone, a QR code will appear. Grab your new phone and go onto your Google Authenticator app.
  5. Click Get Started, then Import Existing Accounts at the bottom. Choose Scan QR code and scan the code on your old phone on your new phone. All done!

It’s a simple but necessary process for keeping your accounts safe.

Now you can get back to enjoying your new phone!
