My first few months as a Digital Marketing Executive

My first few months as a Digital Marketing Executive

24th November 2022

You may have read my introduction blog about my first week at Bopgun not long ago. Well, I’ve now been working here for three months, time flies right?

If you haven’t read my previous blog post or been active on our social channels – you probably have no idea who I am. I’m Vicky, and I’m a Bopgun’s Digital Marketing Executive. I am an apprentice also. I thought it would be interesting to look back on these past few months to give insight into what starting Digital Marketing is like!

What have you learned so far in your role?

Since I’m an apprentice, the learning has been endless! I don’t think I’ve gone to work and not left without learning something. To list everything would fill this whole page; to summarise, I’ve learned about Google Analytics, Photoshop, CMS Systems, SEO… My favourite topic so far has been GA4 and tracking events using Google Tag Manager – it was so rewarding to see what I had set up working in analytics!

What’s been your favourite moment?

I love seeing results! For me, it’s the small wins, so seeing a social post do well in terms of impressions and reach is always one of my mini favourite moments.

Another favourite moment in the studio is when we all dressed up for Halloween, and Jon turned us into a film poster! It was the perfect opportunity to release my inner Harley Quinn.

What have you enjoyed about working at Bopgun?

The team, for one –  it’s been really great working with people who are so supportive and fun to be around. Also, the fact there’s always a challenge to try and conquer. Whether it’s setting something new up on Google Analytics or creating video content, there’s always an opportunity to push myself and learn something new.

The most challenging part of your job?

Since content writing is a huge part of my job, my biggest challenge has been overcoming the dreaded writer’s block! While I love writing, sometimes words just don’t flow to the paper right, and I get stuck in a rut. When this happens, a helpful tip is to work on something else for a while and then return with a fresh mind.

Another tip is using AnswerThePublic to find new content ideas. If you’re ever stuck, it’s a useful tool to see what questions on Google Search are being asked based on keywords.

Any advice you would give to someone starting Digital Marketing?

My advice is to be resilient. Unfortunately, there are no cheat codes to becoming a five-star digital marketer, and there is a lot of trial and error. Especially if you’re an apprentice, you may feel discouraged if something doesn’t go quite right – but it’s all a learning curve! Ask yourself, what could I do differently next time to help get better results and do it!

Summary

I’ve learned so much in my first few months of digital marketing, and I know it’s just the tip of the iceberg, but with time, maybe I’ll be the Neil Patel equivalent – who knows? Overall, I’ve massively enjoyed myself so far, and while sometimes it’s been challenging, overcoming a digital obstacle has got to be one of the best feelings!
