Why Should I Pay Attention to CRO?

Why Should I Pay Attention to CRO?

7th August 2026

A marketer’s guide to getting more from what you already have

You’ve spent the budget. The campaign is live. Traffic is coming in. And yet… the numbers just aren’t doing what you hoped. Sound familiar?

This is where CRO comes in, and if you’re not paying attention to it, you’re probably leaving money on the table every single day.

So, what actually is CRO?

CRO stands for Conversion Rate Optimisation. In plain English, it means figuring out why people visit your website (or landing page, or email, or app) and then don’t do the thing you want them to do. And then fixing it.

A “conversion” is just whatever action matters to your brand. That could be a purchase, a sign-up, a form fill, a phone call, a download. If someone does it, they’ve converted.

Your conversion rate is simply the percentage of visitors who take that action. If 1,000 people visit your page and 20 buy something, your conversion rate is 2%.

CRO is the work of pushing that number up.

Why should a marketer care?

Here’s the thing most marketers don’t think about enough. You can double your revenue in two very different ways:

  1. Double your traffic (spend more on ads, create more content, run more campaigns)
  2. Double your conversion rate (make your existing traffic work harder)

Option 1 costs you more money. Option 2 makes your existing spend go further.

As a brand marketer, you’re often fighting for budget and justifying ROI. CRO is one of the most direct levers you have to improve that ROI without needing to ask for more money.

If your current conversion rate is 2% and you get it to 4%, you’ve just doubled your revenue from the same traffic. Same ad spend. Same SEO effort. Same social media output. Just a smarter, better-performing website.

What does CRO actually look like in practice?

CRO isn’t one thing. It’s a mindset of testing, learning, and improving. Some common examples:

Changing a headline. Sometimes the words on a page aren’t speaking to what your customer actually cares about. A small change to how you frame a benefit can make a big difference to whether someone keeps reading or bounces.

Simplifying a form. Every extra field you ask someone to fill in is a reason for them to give up. Do you actually need their phone number at this stage? Removing friction converts more people.

Moving a button. If your call to action is buried below the fold, people might not even see it. Small layout changes can have a surprising impact.

Rewriting product descriptions. Focusing on what the customer gains, rather than what the product does, tends to work better.

Improving page speed. People are impatient. A page that takes three seconds to load loses a huge chunk of its visitors before they’ve even seen anything.

None of these things require a brand redesign or a new platform. They’re small, testable changes that compound over time.

The big mistake brands make

Most brand teams focus almost all of their energy on getting people to the website. SEO, paid media, PR, influencer, email. All of it pointing people through the door.

And then they don’t pay nearly enough attention to what happens once someone walks through that door.

It’s a bit like spending a fortune on a brilliant shop front and then leaving the inside a mess, with no staff and a confusing layout. You’ve done the hard work of getting people in. Don’t waste it.

CRO is about taking care of the people already there.

The Bopgun way

At Bopgun, we believe CRO should be baked into how you think about your brand online, not bolted on as an afterthought.

That means starting with your customer. What are they actually trying to do when they land on your page? What questions do they need answered before they’ll commit? What’s making them hesitate?

When you answer those questions honestly, the changes you need to make become pretty obvious. You stop guessing and start making decisions based on what real people actually do on your site.

We combine that customer understanding with data from tools like Google Analytics, heatmaps, and A/B testing to build a clear picture of where the friction is and what to do about it. Every change we make has a reason behind it, and we measure whether it worked.

The Bopgun approach isn’t about chasing quick wins (though those happen). It’s about building a culture of continuous improvement, where your website gets a little better every month and your marketing spend goes a little further every quarter.

CRO isn’t a one-off project. It’s an ongoing conversation between your brand and your audience.

Where to start

If you’re new to CRO, don’t try to do everything at once. Start by picking one key page on your website, ideally the one where most people drop off or the one closest to a sale, and ask yourself: what would make this page better for the person reading it?

Then test your answer. See what happens. Learn from it. Do it again.

That’s it. That’s CRO.

It’s not complicated. It just requires the discipline to pay attention to what’s happening, and the willingness to change things when they’re not working.
